A letter from the House Committee on Ways and Means asserts that Penn leadership has failed to comply with the anti-discrimination laws that make them eligible for tax exemptions.

The letter follows the Pennsylvania House of Representatives voting to withhold $31 million in funding from Penn Vet on Dec. 13.

As the House education committee continues to probe Penn over antisemitism after Liz Magill’s fateful testimony, the committee’s chair is being backed by Penn donors Marc Rowan and Ronald Lauder. 

The faculty's letter to trustees expresses opposition to “attempts by trustees, donors, and other external actors to interfere with our academic policies and to undermine academic freedom." 

The majority of Republicans voted to withhold more than $31 million dollars in funding from Penn Vet while every Democrat voted in favor of the funding.

During the hearing, Stefanik repeatedly asked Magill if a call for the genocide of Jewish people would violate Penn’s policies or code of conduct. 

The announcement comes less than two years into Magill's tenure, which began in July 2022.

"Calls for genocide, echoing horrors of the past, violate our behavioral standards and remind us that we must forcefully condemn, prevent, and respond to hate in all forms," the letter said.

The pro-Palestinian sit-in has been ongoing since Nov. 14, featuring film screenings, workshops, and lectures.

Penn community members held Israeli flags and signs that read “zero tolerance for antisemitism,” while chanting “no place for hate at Penn.”
