Penn's own private-prison divestment campaign, Penn Divest from Displacement (PDD) wrote a 2015 editorial in The Daily Pennsylvanian, calling for the University to divest from two prison companies that the group charged with displacing minorities and other oppressed populations.
This program is not the first of its kind, and similar programs have been successful at universities like Brown, Cornell and Columbia.

The tuition-free school and its companion community hospital were projects of 2015 President’s Engagement Prize winner and 2015 College graduate Shadrack Frimpong. The prize is a $100,000 grant from Penn to kickstart a student’s idea for a humanitarian project.
The 5B groups include the Asian Pacific Student Coalition, Lambda Alliance, Latin@ Coalition, United Minorities Council and UMOJA.
This year, Penn will begin awarding a $150,000 scholarship to student leaders in mental health and wellness.
The list took into account numerous factors such as: average early career salary, available financial aid, the university’s academic reputation and average credit hour cost.
