Allyship requires individuals who are not members of a marginalized group to actively fight the oppression of marginalized individuals. 

Apenndx released its inaugural issue in early June, which features content primarily focused on student stories about being displaced or impacted in any way by the COVID-19 pandemic. The issue, last updated on June 22, includes personal essays, opinion columns, poetry, art, and photography curated from dozens of Penn Medicine students.

Shortly after the University released its fall semester plan to open campus and offer instruction in a hybrid format, students voiced mixed reactions. While some are concerned about intense time zone differences, Penn's testing abilities, and housing, others are excited to return to campus. 

Penn will invite students back to campus on Sept. 1 for a hybrid fall 2020 semester with a mixture of in-person and virtual instruction. The remainder of the semester will be conducted online after Thanksgiving break.

Selected from a pool of more than 150 applicants, the newly assembled cohort is a diverse set of rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors from four undergraduate schools and many different countries. 

Because summer classes are taught remotely and not in person this year, students said they chose to take summer courses at other institutions which charged less for transferable course credits, in comparison to courses that Penn is offering.

As Vice President for Social Equity and Community, Howard will oversee programs and initiatives that foster social equality, inclusion, and diversity at Penn through various research and collaborative efforts.

Following backlash from thousands of students, alumni, and faculty regarding the University's relationship with local police forces, the University has also commissioned an independent review of its Division of Public Safety.

Black Lives Matter Philadelphia's protest began peacefully on May 30, but as the group walked past City Hall, they encountered a large presence from the Philadelphia Police Department. There, the protest quickly turned violent.

Though Penn and the city of Philadelphia had already implemented nondiscrimination ordinances for LGBTQ+ individuals, Director of Penn's LGBT Center Dr. Erin Cross said she believes the decision will still have a major impact on the Penn community.

The new concentrations ⁠— Advocacy & Activism, Audiences & Persuasion, Culture & Society, Data & Network Science, and Politics & Policy ⁠— represent a "less is more approach." 

BPLA shared a compilation of resources for students, including recommended Penn faculty and staff, courses focusing on Black issues, Black LGBTQ courses, and Black movies for white allies.

While several organizations have released statements and raised money towards anti-racist and community-oriented organizations in recent weeks, some Greek organizations have committed to addressing racism and a lack of diversity within their own chapters on campus.

As of this month, Campaign for Community will offer grants of up to $1500 toward proposals concerning racial justice at Penn, in Philadelphia, and in students’ home communities. 

The summer cohort includes over 90 students from a variety of degree-seeking programs, such as Wharton MBA, Penn Dental, and Penn Veterinary Medicine students, who are pursuing joint degrees. 

As the Black Lives Matter movement continues to grow, performing arts groups including Penn Glee Club, Penn Singers, and Mask and Wig Club are making efforts to become more inclusive.
