There’s a movement afoot in the National Football League to sanitize the game. High-dollar fines for helmet-to-helmet hits make headlines. Snazzy commercials with Ray Lewis, Tom Brady and men in white lab coats dazzle viewers. But everything the NFL does today comes with a tacit admission that football is an inherently violent sport.

There is no such thing as a free Spring Fling. The Social Planning and Event Committee’s 2012-2013 year budget allocations show that putting on the annual Spring Fling concert is a $376,000 affair.

Last week, Falk Dining Commons worker Kenny Blackwell and his wife Carolyn were told something that no one wants to hear: Carolyn Blackwell needed medicine for her cholesterol, but their insurance, which is offered through Aetna by Bon Appétit, would not stretch to cover even the generic version of the drug.

Maybe it was a generator explosion, Erica Denhoff thought. She asked the policeman if it was safe to continue. He said yes. They would tell her if it stopped being safe. But a few miles later, there were more Boston police officers and more frantic people trying to reach their loved ones on the phone lines that would be down for hours.

Despite all of the huffing and puffing about hook-up culture, casual sex isn’t the problem. The problem is communication — or rather, lack thereof. It’s not time that we stop hooking up, but it is time to stop hooking up without telling our partners what we want.

PennDems made a strong emotional plea for what they called “sensible and meaningful gun control legislation.” That is why I was so disappointed to see the same old, tired suggestions: ban “military-style” weapons and restrict magazine size.
