Thank you for the article, (12/4) “From Demolition to Collaboration,” a lengthy and carefully investigated report on Penn’s development and its relationship to the community since the l960’s. I note that these decades coincide with my own as homeowner and community member. I enjoyed reading in the great Furness Library before Locust Walk led to the campus or Van Pelt existed.




On Friday, students and members of the Philadelphia community joined in a performance art demonstration organized by student organization SOUL (Students Organizing for Unity and Liberation), to protest against the jury's decision not to indict the police officer in the Eric Garner chokehold case.

In response to increased criticism of the Rolling Stone article entitled "A Rape on Campus," written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, the publication admitted to possible discrepancies within the original article and its sourcing.


Four days after officially taking over the reins of Penn football, head coach Ray Priore hasn't waited long to put his own stamp on the program. With the defensive coordinator position vacant after Priore's promotion, Penn Athletics has confirmed that current Albany defensive coordinator Bob Benson will fill the same position with the Red and Blue. "I'm thrilled to add someone of Bob's experience to our staff," Priore said in a statement.

25 Columbia football players sent a letter to the school's President and Board of Trustees alleging that coach Pete Mangurian has mishandled players' concussions as well as other abuses, the Columbia Spectator reports. Accordiing to the Spectator, the letter, which has since been withdrawn, says that Mangurian also created rifts between underclassmen and upperclassmen while being physically abusive. Mangurian's tenure as the Lions' coach hasn't gone well on the field either.

The Vice President and Treasurer of a Princeton eating club were asked to leave their positions following offensive emails sent out that included an explicit photograph.  The emails — sent out to the entire club mailing list — included one of a male and female engaged in a sexual act in the Tiger Inn, a public space of the club, and another commenting on the lawsuit by a Princeton alumna that made the university's eating clubs admit women. Six weeks after Princeton began an investigation to look into the emails, they decided Vice President Adam Krop and Treasurer Drew Hoffenberg were to step down from their positions.  Click here to read the full story.

After a suicide attempt, Princeton freshman W.P. was told he would not be allowed to return to campus. Following requests by the university to take a voluntary leave of absence to seek medical care, the school involuntarily withdrew him after his latest suicide attempt — his third in three years.  W.P.

Colleges are using big data to improve graduation rates and save students money.  Following studies that report a correlation between active campus lives and higher graduation rates, Ball State University has been keeping track of students' activities by tracking which events they swipe into and have specialists focused on retention reach out to students whose activity has been lacking.  Some big data is being used to keep track of specific student groups, such as low-income students.


Sixty years ago, Penn's approach to development was all about self-interest. Now, working with the neighborhood is essential to the University's construction strategy.
