Now that Joe Scott has left Princeton for the clear skies and lower expectations of Denver, athletic director Gary Walters and the Tigers are left with a monumental decision: Should Princeton maintain the coaching lineage of Pete Carril or should they focus solely on winning? This is not to say that naming a coach from the prolific Carril legacy and winning are mutually exclusive, but Princeton's upcoming decision is not necessarily the best opportunity to find that combination.

L'Oreal thinks Wharton is worth it. A team of students from Wharton West, the business school's San Francisco branch, has advanced to the final round of L'Oreal's e-Strat competition, which asks participants to play the role of a simulated cosmetics company's general manager.

When one Penn freshman had her coat stolen at a bar last month, she was understandably upset. Only 19, the student faced a choice: Either bite the bullet and report the crime - and face the consequences for underage drinking - or kiss her $150 jacket goodbye.

This was no ordinary women's tennis match. About 100 cheering fans were holding or wearing free T-shirts and eating pizza as Penn battled Princeton Saturday afternoon at Lott Courts. Michael Dowd's team went out of its way to set up and market this event, publicizing it on Locust Walk, and spending mostly its own money to make it happen.

Off to their best start since 1980, some members of the No. 11 Penn women's lacrosse team believe they still aren't getting their due respect. Now they have one less reason to think so. After the then-No. 14 Quakers (8-1, 3-0 Ivy League) beat then-No. 12 Johns Hopkins (6-4) 12-4 and Columbia (3-6, 0-3) 14-6 last week, coach Karin Brower was named the U.

Ingredients to victory lined up for Quakers

Mix equal parts of good pitching and timely hitting. Add a dash of power and a pinch of defense. Stir together. For the first time all season, Quakers coach John Cole feels as if the recipe is complete.

"They just don't make men like that anymore." So said College senior Claire Stapleton after attending "dapper" author Gay Talese's lecture on his experiences as an Italian American and his writing career. Talese, who was the first Kelly Writers House Fellow in 1999, returned to Penn for a lecture yesterday evening, speaking to a mixed crowd of about 75 students and adults.

For other Ivies, too, admit rates plunge

It's like the limbo for Ivy League admissions rates - they just keep going lower and lower. Five other Ivy League schools joined Penn in admitting the lowest rates of applicants yet, but experts say Penn has the best chance to keep the momentum going. Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, Brown and Columbia universities all joined Penn by accepting record-low percentages of applicants.
