Not again. The Penn football team began its 2008 season the way it has endured the last few -- with another overtime loss, this time 20-14 to Villanova, that tugged at heartstrings and will test the mettle of a young team. Penn had taken a 14-7 lead on a Mike DiMaggio run and was even with the No.

In the interest of team chemistry, many athletes take great pains to keep from airing their dirty laundry in the locker room. For the Penn football team, the formula is far simpler: Just give it to Jordan Manning. The Quakers senior enters his third season as starting strong safety - and his second as assistant to the squad's althletic equipment administrator, a work-study position that leaves him in charge of the post-practice laundry load for the Red and Blue.

The Latest

Penn senior Natalie Capuano leads the women's soccer team with an impressive three goals in four matches on the young season. But even more impressive is a Georgetown defense that has allowed a total of two goals in six games - which makes Capuano's individual scoring average more than double that of the Hoyas' opponents.

The University is taking a wait-and-see approach to evaluating how the recent chaos on Wall Street will affect fundraising. The fall of major financial firms like Lehman Brothers Holdings and Merrill Lynch & Co. has left University officials concerned, but they are not yet making any major decisions or assessments about Penn's $3.5 billion capital campaign.

Reeling from four straight losses, Penn coach Kerry Carr has devised a master plan. "We're going to work on winning," she said. The Quakers will face La Salle, Bucknell and Villanova at the Villanova classic today and tomorrow, before returning to the Palestra to take on Seton Hall on Sunday.

M. Soccer | Road warriors finally become Rhodes warriors this weekend

In its first four games of the season, the men's soccer team has looked impressive, going 3-0-1 without allowing a single goal. Up to this point, however, Penn has done it all away from home, winning tournaments at Marquette and then at Princeton. That changes this weekend, when the Quakers host Buffalo tonight and Mercer on Sunday afternoon as part of the seventh annual Penn Soccer Classic.

This year, the Undergraduate Assembly (UA), Penn's University-wide, elected branch of student government, will be more present on campus than ever before. If you don't know what the UA is, we will strive to change that - and not for ourselves, but for you.

College junior Sarah Martin sees volunteering during this year's presidential campaign as a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity, and she isn't letting it slip by. Behind the flyers, clipboards and Locust Walk tables are an especially dedicated few - students who are giving up their weekdays and weekends, their nights and days, to get Sen.

Last week Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) asked officials at the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Treasury Department to develop a new tax form specifically for colleges and universities. The proposal for the new form is part of a wider governmental movement, led by Grassley, to examine how universities manage their money as tuition costs continue to rise.

This isn't your big brother's Dartmouth. No, the Big Green, often written off as the bottom-feeders of the Ivy League, no longer serve only as a practice squad for the rest of the conference. They may not be title contenders, but their opponents can no longer look to trips to Hanover as guaranteed wins.

As many of you already know, Fall Restaurant Week arrived in full force on Sunday. Over 100 restaurants in Philadelphia, including some of the city's hottest and most expensive establishments, have put out $35 fixed-price, multi-course dinner menus. Although I definitely wouldn't call myself a "foodie"- it's hard to eat foie gras and veal when you're a vegetarian - I do enjoy partaking in dining options a step up from 1920 Commons.

With volunteers passing out voter-registration forms at every corner, it is hard to imagine a Penn student being unable to register. But for the underclassmen who won't celebrate their 18th birthdays until after Nov. 4, the phrase "four more years" has taken on a new meaning.

The Scandinavian population at Penn isn't huge. Nor is there overwhelming Polish or Vietnamese representation in the Penn student body. Even so, these are just a few of the growing number of heritages at the forefront of student clubs on campus. Such denominations can be a significant part of students' lives and one that many choose to explore or celebrate within a club structure.

With the new proposed location for the Foxwoods Casino, city officials might have just hit the jackpot. Foxwoods and government officials recently announced that the casino group would consider building its multi-million dollar venue in the Gallery Mall near 9th and Market streets, instead of on the Delaware River.

While the rest of the Penn field hockey team was finishing up against Lafayette last night, midfielder Sarah Warner was in a hospital, getting stitches after picking up a knock earlier in the game. Adding insult to injury, Penn was beaten on the scoreboard, 2-0, extending its losing streak to five.

Cornell football will have a new look this year - literally. Coach Jim Knowles removed the "C" from the players' helmets in an effort to improve their effort and dedication. He needed to do something after the Big Red finished seventh in the Ivy League last year with a 2-5 record and were physically dominated by most teams.

Getting credit for courses taken outside of Penn just got a whole lot easier - or so the School of Arts and Sciences says. This past summer SAS launched a new computerized program designed to make credit transfer easier for students who have transferred from another school, earned cre

Before his first season at Columbia began in 2006, coach Norries Wilson offered a bold prediction in an interview with Columbia College Today. "We will not win the Ivy League championship," he said. "I'm guaranteeing that." The words proved prescient, as the Lions stumbled to a 2-5 conference mark.
