Launched in February 2014, Barring Eyewear is a Philadelphia-based company founded by three students aspiring to create high-quality and affordable sunglasses. The co-founders of the company, inspired by their mutual love for sunglasses and concern for cancer research, built Barring Eyewear to raise fundings for cancer research.


Following the first home football game of the season, the Penn community headed to Penn Park for Skimmerfest, a celebration put on by the Class Boards and SPEC. The festival featured free food from various vendors, laser tag, carnival games, as well as a live performance by rapper Shwayze.

The divestment club Fossil Free Penn had their first meeting of the year on  Sept. 25  in Harrison College House.  The club demands that the University freeze new investments in fossil fuels, divest their current investments and reinvest their money in sustainable companies or projects.

On Friday, Pakathon, a Pakistan oriented hackathon, began its second annual startup weekend with teams in 16 cities across North America and Pakistan. During the three day conference, groups of students worked to create technological solutions to problems in Pakistan.

Office of Admissions reinforced its effort in Penn’s commitment to creating a diverse community.PEEP – Penn Early Exploration Program – launched its first application earlier this month with the goal of having talented high school seniors from historically underrepresented population learn about Penn and its application process.This equity and access initiative definition “historically underrepresented” population includes first-generation Asian Americans and LGBTQ in addition to its usual minority groups.“This year we reached out directly to prospective students in our database and community-based organizations like Questbridge, KIPP and National Hispanic Institute to promote the program to their students,” Vice Dean of Office of Admissions Yvonne Romero Da Silva said in an email statement.There were previous programs similar to PEEP, but the new program approaches the students more directly than counselor nomination based program before.
