Fall 2013 Undergraduate Assembly Elections

Amy Gutmann hit newsstands this Tuesday. With the three other female Ivy League presidents, she strikes a jaunty pose for Glamour's Women of the Year issue. Hands on hips, she gazes upward, envisioning great things for the future of Penn. Gutmann is gaining national attention.


I hate to beat a dead horse, but I just can't let this one go. What I saw Friday at the beginning of Penn's season opener was just embarrassing. And I'm not talking about what we all (or, some of us) saw on the court, where the Quakers stumbled their way to 24 points in the first half - shooting 31 percent from the field, 25 percent from distance and 42.

Elected last night, College junior Matt Dwyer will take the helm of the InterFraternity Council for the group's next term. Dwyer, who ran unopposed and is currently the president of Alpha Tau Omega, will officially assume the post after spring rush in February.

Dreams for another Ivy title for the men's basketball team took a hit yesterday when results came back on guard Darren Smith's knee injury. The sophomore, who took a knock on the kneecap early in the first half Friday against Drexel, will miss the remainder of this season with a fractured right patella.

One Penn professor is working to fill in longtime holes in Southeast Asian history. Archeology professor Joyce White hopes to find the once-inaccessible keys to opening up the region's history through a research project in the southeast Asian state of Laos, where she will return to in March.

Before a packed crowd of about 1,000 people at the Convention Center, University and city officials laid out a new vision for developing one of Philadelphia's most underutilized assets: its waterfront. Two males unaffiliated with the University were robbed last week, Division of Public Safety officials said. Two male suspects approached the victims at about 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 9 on the 3900 block of Spruce Street and demanded money. The offenders then took the phones of both complainants and fled in an unknown direction.

Jonathan Greenblatt wants to change the world, one bottle of water at a time. In his keynote speech for the sixth annual Integrity Week, the co-founder of Ethos Water discussed how his company came to be and its continued mission to provide the world's children with clean drinking water.

The department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics earned a $70 million design-technology package from the Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education organization yesterday morning.


With Dunphy era over, Jackson readies for his Penn homecoming

As third-year Howard coach Gil Jackson goes up against his former team this weekend, even he may be surprised at how soon his return to the Palestra has come. The 16-year Penn assistant coach, who came to the program with Fran Dunphy in 1989, won nine Ivy championships and left for the Bison's head job after the 2004-05 season.

Theft Nov. 9 - A male employee reported that a laptop was taken at about 3:45 p.m. from an unsecured office at the McNeil Building, located at 3718 Locust Walk. Nov. 9 - A male student reported that at about 5:30 p.m., an unknown suspect removed his bike, secured with a cable lock, from Huntsman Hall, located at 3730 Spruce St.


Nutter highlights 'Identity' opening

What makes you you? What gives a city like Philadelphia its identity? Those were the questions posed last night at the official launch of the Franklin Institute's newest exhibit, "Identity: An Exhibition of You." To kick off the event, mayor-elect Michael Nutter gave a keynote address in the museum's historic Franklin Hall about "The Identity of the New Philadelphia," one of the first speeches he has given since he was elected Nov.

Most people wouldn't mention "ag school" and "Ivy League" in the same breath. This is probably because along with Penn, everyone forgets about that school up in Ithaca. Nonetheless, I was surprised to learn recently that Yale did, indeed, have an ag program of sorts - a food-and-agriculture concentration within their environmental-studies department.


Carre's Monarchs anything but regal

It wasn't a smooth transition from the field to the sidelines.Former Penn wide receiver Matt Carre's first season as a coach was rough. But even after starting the season 0-9, Carre tried to stay positive as he took the field as King's College intern assistant coach for the team's final game of the year last Saturday.

Nearly a dozen Drexel University students have been robbed just north of the school's campus over the last month, though Philadelphia Police arrested one juvenile male Friday who is linked to some of the muggings. There have been a total of 11 robberies between Market and Spring Garden streets and between 31st and 36th streets since October, Philadelphia Police Sgt.
