Two of the speakers at Penn's March for Science have associations with Penn: Paul Offit, who is the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania, and Ishmail Abdus-Saboor, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neuroscience.

The Goldwater Scholarship is awarded each year to students around the country who intend to earn a doctorate and pursue a research career in math, engineering or the natural sciences.

Wharton freshman Linda Zhang said she has participated in over 10 experiments from the Wharton Behavioral Laboratory this year, earning about $100. “You can earn easy money," she said. "Like if [I] have an hour in between classes, that’s usually what I do."

Postdoctoral fellow Jason Diaz said he believes the Trump administration's budget proposal, which was released last month, convinced many people to take part in the march.

Looking forward, GAPSA President-elect Miles Owen wants to continue to address important issues, as well as other problems that have been "simmering in the background," he said.

Steering Committee Member of Democratic Socialists of America Dustin Guastella said there is a need for mass protests and organization, but warned against abstract statements like “Love Trumps Hate,” which are “fundamentally non-political.” 

Under the proposed budget, TRIO — a consortium of programs that includes Upward Bound — would have its budget slashed by 10 percent. GEAR UP, a state and partnership grant program for public schools in low-income neighborhoods, would lose one third of its federal funding.

The Truman Scholarship, which provides up to $30,000, is a merit-based award that supports graduate studies of students who want to pursue careers in government or public service. Previous recipients of the Truman Scholarship include former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice.

The African Languages Program has gotten bigger in recent years, with Malagasy — the principal language spoken in Madagascar — added as another option to study in 2013. 

Many Wharton MBAs go into consulting and startups. First-year student Clyde Kelly is no different, except for the fact that he is also a successful rapper.

“I don’t appreciate the University’s one-size-fits-all approach, where it assumes everyone comes from the same background,” College junior David Thai said.

“This is an attachment that attaches onto the exhaust pipe of the wood burning stove, and it captures some of the heat that is being lost through the exhaust,” Engineering senior Kellen Sanna said.

Professor of plastic surgery in the Perelman School of Medicine Paris Butler and vice-provost’s postdoctoral fellow in the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics Ahmaad Jenkins received the honor. 

“If we think about our lives without music or movies or art or literature in any way, what kind of a hit will our well-being take? We don’t have way yet to quantify that," religious studies professor James Pawelski said. 

In the press release, Legend said he was “thrilled” to work with Penn on “critical issues” that the US criminal justice system faces.

After two years in the accounting Ph.D. program, Paul is clearer about the benefits and detriments of going immediately into a Ph.D. program — as she did — versus starting out in the working world.

“Everything we can do to make the voting experience more trustworthy and more efficient is a step towards ensuring higher participation in our democratic processes,” student author and Wharton MBA student Michael Windle said.
