The Associated Press has called Pennsylvania's Senate race in favor of the challenger, state Treasurer Bob Casey Jr. Casey's opponent, Sen. Rick Santorum, has been in the seat since 1994 and is the No. 3 Republican in the Senate leadership. The Pennsylvania seat is one of those the Democrats counted on taking in order to win control of the Senate.

In Arizona, voters will decide today on a ballot measure that would reward one lucky voter with lottery funds.

I took a photo, too To the Editor: I am writing to acknowledge that the photo I took with a student at the annual Halloween Party ("Controversy erupts over student in terror garb," DP, 11/3/06) has caused a kind of wounding to some in the Penn community. I did not immediately associate what I saw of the student's costume with the kind of gear worn by a suicide bomber.

Let's play a little game. I'll give you two description of one of Penn's college houses, and you'll try to guess which one is more accurate. For the moment, let's call our test case "Gutmann College House." Gutmann is the complete college house. It is ideally located near major academic buildings, libraries, retail shops and athletic facilities.

Anyone would be tough-pressed to find a major incumbent in Pennsylvania more deserving of a second term that Ed Rendell. Especially if you're voting in Philadelphia; Rendell has been great for the city and the state. Before Rendell took office in 2002, Pennsylvania was ranked 42nd of all states for job growth.

PRINCETON, N.J. When Matt Reinert's desperate dash to the end zone in the second overtime period on Saturday fell just a couple yards short, the game-ending whistle also marked the end of the Quakers' slim - but until then still existent - hopes of an Ivy League title.

As the sun went down on Princeton, N.J., so it did on the collegiate soccer careers of Tracy Bienenfeld and Megan Boys. The Penn defenders laced their cleats for the last time on Saturday in a 2-0 loss to Princeton. Freshman goalie Sara Rose yielded a pair of unassisted goals to Princeton's Lauren Thomas in the game's only scores.

Not even the surging Quakers could take the Tigers, although they came very close. A late push from Penn (9-8, 4-3 Ivy) forced overtime, but Princeton (10-6, 7-0 Ivy) barely survived to win, 2-1, and finish undefeated in Ivy League play. Ex-Wharton professor Scott Ward's arraignment date should be set by Saturday, according to the Clerk's Office at the U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va. A judge had set Nov. 10 as the deadline. At the arraignment, Ward could be officially charged. Ward was arrested in August for allegedly importing child pornography.

Pennsylvania State Treasurer Bob Casey Jr. is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Rick Santorum for his seat in Congress. Casey, the son of former Pennsylvania Gov. Bob Casey, says that his strong record and solid character make him the right choice. On the issues, Casey says he supports a plan for withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, and has emphasized affordable health care and fiscal responsibility.

Apology owed To the Editor: I just wanted to congratulate President Gutmann on an interesting choice for a holiday picture pose ("Controversary erupts over student in terror garb," DP, 11/3/06). The body language certainly is telling; naivete meets duplicity (I'll let you determine which is which).

No one can deny this measure has good intentions. Those who serve Philadelphians by saving citizens from fires and keeping them safe deserve our respect and our gratitude. And when they are killed in the line of duty, it's their children who are left to pick up the pieces.
