'Academic Blog' to improve advising

As one of the goals of the proposed new curriculum is to provide students with increased academic freedom, the initiative also includes enhancements to the pre-major advising program.

According to the latest draft of the curriculum initiative, "the role of faculty advisers, Assistant Deans for Advising and peer advisers will become all the more important."

Central to this effort is something that will be called the "Academic Blog."

Before registering for classes each semester, students will be required to write a few paragraphs about their academic goals for their advisers to read in the Web log.

College Dean Dennis DeTurck said that the idea behind the blog was to make sure that both students and advisers are more prepared for their meetings, thus making their time spent together more valuable.

"It's certainly in the spirit of what we're doing" with the rest of the proposed curriculum, Student Committee on Undergraduate Education Chairwoman Farrah Freis said, adding that she believes the College's administration is committed to improving the advising system.

The blog "is just something people will get used to," DeTurck said.
