Educating Marc Teillon

To the Editor: The column, however, does not include an important facet of Proposition 187 -- enforcement of the ideas. Enforcement of the Proposition will not be by any type of statewide registration or checkpoint. It will be the responsibility of all teachers, physicians, and citizens to turn in any illegal immigrants. When enforcement is subjected to personal bias, discrimination becomes prevalent. Who is to say a Latino looks legal or illegal? Surely a teacher or doctor can't distinguish. So, should every citizen in California (a pretty large state) be made to carry papers and "green cards" to school and to their doctors' offices in order to verify citizenship. Economically, it would make little sense to have checkpoints located at all the schools and hospitals in order to find all the illegals. So, how will they do it? Probably, just pick all the dark, Spanish-speaking, brown-haired Mexicans, remove them from class, and have them prove their "worthiness" of being "allowed" in America. Finally, when Marc writes "until Sam Rivera and MeCHA [sic] realize this, they better get used to their current lot -- in the back of the pack and behind the times" he is, in fact, being racist. He has equated an entire student association of Mexican-Americans (legal citizens, that is) with the illegal immigrants from Mexico. As Mexican-Americans, we have the same rights as any other American. These rights and our Mexican work and family ethics will lead us out of the "back of the pack" and, on the way out, hopefully educate people like Marc. OMAR GONZALEZ College '97 MEChA Treasurer
