LETTER: More Division

To the Editor: I was amazed by Newberry's short term and selective memory. The Democratic party's own talent for fostering division and intolerance has been ignored. It took me less than five minutes to come up with the following examples: · Do the names Jesse Jackson, Sister Souljah, and Ice-T invoke any memories? Democratic "race-baiting" was clearly documented earlier this summer when Slick Willie --lionized by the liberal media as "Bill Clinton" -- publicly criticized these three. Only the politically naive would claim that Slick Willie's criticisms of Jesse Jackson were purely ideological. And there is no doubt in my mind that his rebukes of Sister Souljah and Ice-T were racially motivated. · Nowhere does Newberry acknowledge the division and intolerance fostered by Slick Willie's protectionism, creating an "us" against "the world" mentality. Appealing to xenophobic bigots and racists, Slick Willie's rhetoric would have the American people believe that the Germans, the Japanese and the North American Free Trade Agreement are all bad for us. · As much as the Republican party would like you to believe that homosexuality is wrong, Slick Willie would like everyone to believe that earning $200,000 is wrong. I find no argument that would support Slick Willie's unfair and arbitrary discrimination. Just do not believe Newberry when he says the Democratic party is the party of inclusion. The Democratic party does not include me, for one. GEORGE SHIAU Engineering/Wharton '94
