A male student was struck by a car on Friday night while crossing the road at the intersection of 38th and Spruce streets.
Masamba Sinclair, a College freshman, was hit at approximately 11:27 p.m. He sustained a concussion and was taken by ambulance to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, located on 111 S. 11th St. Police did not comment on whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident.
The incident disrupted traffic on the north-south artery for more than 30 minutes as police officials cordoned off the road with tape and closed it to traffic on one side.
Police officials said that Liansheng Ren, the 41-year-old driver of the car, was admitted to Hahnemann University Hospital with unknown injuries. Officials at the hospital could not confirm if or when Ren had been released from the hospital.
Sinclair received several minor injuries in addition to his concussion. "I have a lot of cuts and bruises and a fracture on the left side of my skull," he said. "My left eye is swollen shut."
Sinclair said he woke up on Saturday morning confused and disoriented, thinking he was located in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
"I had a neck brace on and cuffs about my ankles," he said. He was unable to recount the incident, remembering nothing past 7 p.m. on Friday.
"I'm still confused as to what I was doing there," he said. "I don't know why I was crossing 38th at that time."
Sinclair added that he is currently feeling better and expects to be released on Tuesday or Wednesday.
"I should make a full recovery," he said. "I don't know if I will regain my memory [of the incident], though."
Sinclair said that because of the incident, he will end his semester and return home for the year. He also intends to work with police to investigate the incident further once he has recovered.
"I'm not too happy to be going home early because I've put so much work into this semester," Sinclair said. "But in a way, I am happy to be going home."
