In the past, Philadelphia Fire Department officials have expressed annoyance with intoxicated Penn students throwing up in their vehicles, Superintendent of Penn Police Maureen Rush said.  

The judge also continued Samuel Woodward's post preliminary hearing arraignment until Nov. 9. 

A UPennAlert was sent at approximately 8:30 p.m., and a subsequent 'all clear' was declared 15 minutes later. 

The evidence and testimonies presented at the pre-trial hearing provided the most vivid glimpse into the interactions and relationship of Woodward and Bernstein leading up to Bernstein's death. 

Over three months, the Penn Police responded to a number of incidents involving simple assault and package theft. 

Samuel Woodward, 21, could face life in prison without parole if convicted of the crime with the sentencing enhancement of a hate crime. 

 Reports that the homicide was a hate crime have been circulating since the spring, but this is the first time that formal charges are being raised. 

On May 15, Temple University senior Ari Goldstein was arrested for attempted rape, according to Philly Voice. 

The Philadelphia Police are currently investigating the string of assaults and urges anyone with information to come forward.

Orange County DA spokesperson Michelle Van Der Linden confirmed that the hearing was postponed and has not been rescheduled. 

The suspect, a black male in his 30s, seen wearing a tan jacket, black gloves, a white hat, and sunglasses, is still at large.

The alert indicated that the suspect was last seen inside the hotel, but that police were on the scene and patrolling the area.

Both the Philadelphia Police Department and Temple Police are investigating the homicide, and Temple’s announcement noted the investigators “do not believe that this was a random act.”

“I cannot judge if [the perpetrator] is experienced or not, but what I can tell that he is trying his best to evade authorities,” Maureen Rush, the Vice President for Public Safety and Superintendent of the Penn Police, said.

In a letter signed by over 90 student organizations at American universities, the Harvard Black Law Students Association claimed that the arrest was a 'a brutal instance of police violence.'
