Chelsea Manning was sentenced in 2011 to 35 years in military prison, where she began transitioning and started her journey as an LGBTQ activist.

Harvard's Drew Gilpin Faust is not the only university leader to publicize her institution's opposition to the bill. Penn President Amy Gutmann called the bill "regressive" in an emailed statement sent to all University students and staff in early November.

Brown has helped victims of natural disasters multiple times in the past, including after Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. 

“People don’t consider that refugees had a full and vibrant life before they became refugees. This experience of being a refugee isn’t all that they are. They’re so much more than that.”
