The Daily Pennsylvanian

9/11 10th Anniversary Issue

In recent years, the Penn community has been pushing toward reform regarding the treatment of mental illness, both bureaucratically within Counseling and Psychological Services and socially among students. We have seen agendas written up, sensitivity training initiated, and we’ve been urged to learn and relearn that it is okay to not be okay. But even so, at Pennsylvania Hospital, I found it difficult to reach out to my peers.

The Harvard Crimson conducted a senior survey and produced some interesting statistics about Harvard's Class of 2015. Here's some bullet points of the most interesting figures from the survey (To check out the whole survey, click here). 74 percent of black students felt marginalized because of their race while they were at Harvard. 3.64 mean reported GPA while 72 percent of those who responded felt that grade inflation wasn't a big problem. 19.5 percent admitted to cheating while recruited athletes were more likely to have said they cheated than the rest of the Class of 2015. 24 percent said they did not have sex while at Harvard. 14.4 percent of women said they had been sexually assaulted. Do you think these stats would be similar for Penn's Class of 2015? Do you think grade inflation is an issue at Harvard?

The President's Engagement Prize was announced last summer as part of Penn President Amy Gutmann's vision for students to engage with the world, as set forth in the Penn Compact 2020.

There is something missing from progressive social movements, city government and neighborhood-level decision making, and it is not Ivy League graduates. It is the participation of the communities we hope to “serve” on the frontline of the social issues that affect them the most.

A few weeks ago, 34th Street published an article detailing some aspects of cocaine use at our University. The story failed to make the connection between consumption in our own sheltered environment, and the violent drug cartels in developing countries that supply the drug.

Harvard's engineering program is getting a new name — and a fair amount of money to go along with it. Harvard Business School alum and hedge fund manager John Paulson donated $400 million to the University to endow its school of engineering and applied sciences.

Texas' state legislature is passing a law to allow concealed handguns in the classroom. The campus-carry bill, which would allow students and faculty to have concealed handguns all around state campuses, is expected to be signed into law by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and would take effect starting in August 2016.  Texas would become the eighth state to officially allow concealed handguns on campus.
