The recent successes of Penn’s athletic teams should be reflected in students’ attendance at games

Start making plans now. Penn sports teams are excelling and playing at home this weekend. Football is playing Harvard in the game that more or less decides the Ivy League championship, and men’s soccer is still in title contention.

Though teams have been playing like champs, you wouldn’t be able to tell based on the less-than-stellar attendance at games. Of course, students should watch their fellow students whether teams are winning or losing, but when victory is in the teams’ reach, there is all the more reason to be excited about showing support for the Red and Blue.

Groups like the Theta Xi Wrecking Crew show how other sports teams and social organizations can come together to show their school spirit, and Penn students’ attendance at Princeton games this weekend prove that games can become about socializing as well as about the action on the field. Student groups across the spectrum should make games into events more often.

And with the (early!) reopening of the South Street Bridge this weekend, students have even less of an excuse for staying home. The bridge’s reopening will make getting to soccer matches easier.

When it comes to fall sports teams, there’s a lot to be excited about right now. Get excited. Show up in the stands.
