Local Natives to perform at Fall Concert

Los Angeles-based indie rock band Local Natives is set to headline the Student Planning and Events Committee’s Fall Concert with The Ruby Suns in the Rotunda on Oct. 22.

The Local Natives made their debut in February 2010 with their critically acclaimed LP, Gorilla Manor, and have been compared to Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear. The Ruby Suns, who will open, are an indie psychedelic pop group from New Zealand.

SPEC Concerts Co-Director and College junior Shana Rusonis said that the Local Natives are a new band, but already have good initial press and climbing ticket prices.

“We’re really excited to basically bring a new band to the Penn community,” she said. “They have a small devoted following right now and they’re getting bigger so we’re really lucky to get them at this point in time.”

SPEC Concerts Co-Director and College junior Jordan Sale said in a statement that the “relaxed vibe from these two bands” will make for a good time for students.

Last year’s Fall Concert was headlined by indie rock bands The Walkmen and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Other years have seen musician and comedian Stephen Lynch, singer-songwriter Ben Kweller and “Hallelujah” singer Rufus Wainwright.

Though most students have not yet heard of the new band, some find the low price — just one dollar per ticket with a PennCard — incentive enough. Tickets in previous years have cost between $10 and $15.

“That’s a good deal for live music,” Wharton freshman Kenji Tulman said.

“I’d go for a dollar,” College senior Alisha Prystowsky agreed.

Others were less enthusiastic. “I probably wouldn’t go just because I don’t know who they are,” College senior Caroline Nicholson said.

College junior Ned Shell said that he’s “just waiting for the Spring Fling artists to be announced.”

Tickets will be available for Penn students on Locust Walk starting Oct. 13.
