The Social Planning and Events Committee will unveil plans today for Spring Fling 2009 - scheduled for Apr. 17-18 - by officially announcing the theme and annual T-shirt design contest.
The theme, "Some Flings Never Get Old," intends to evoke a taste of nostalgia through wordplay, explained College junior and SPEC Fling Co-Director Amber Calloway.
"Fling is one of the most cherished holidays at Penn now. There's a pretty long history behind it," said College sophomore and Fling Co-Director Jayme Van Oot. "We thought it would be fun to look back on the past as we plan the activities and vendors."
Fling committee member and College freshman Garrett Albanesius came up with the theme, which was chosen by SPEC last December.
For those unable to wait until April for Fling festivities to begin, SPEC has begun accepting submissions for the T-shirt logo contest, according to a press release.
The subcommittee will accept designs until Feb. 20. However, they have not yet determined the date at which the winning submission will be announced, only hinting that it will be close to Spring Break.
SPEC encouraged students to submit original designs relevant to both the "fun theme" and "spirit of Fling."
The winning submission will receive $100, two tickets to the Fling concert and a free T-shirt featuring the design.
While the performer for the event has not yet been decided, the press release said the committee is currently collecting submissions from both Penn and non-Penn groups for daytime performances.
