LGBT POLICY
McCain
McCain defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, but he also believes individual states should decide whether to pass constitutional amendments affirming this definition of marriage.
He does not support marriage benefits for same-sex couples.
Obama
Obama believes that marriage is between a man and a woman.
However, he supports equal rights for same-sex couples and believes there should be no difference between heterosexual couples and same-sex couples in the eyes of the law.
ABORTION
McCain
McCain is pro-life and would advocate for the reversal of Roe v. Wade. He believes the decision on abortion rights should be left to individual states to decide rather than the federal government.
He also plans to increase funding for faith-based and community organizations that provide help for pregnant mothers who need it and that promote adoption as an alternative to abortion.
Obama
Obama believes in a woman's right to choose. He plans to oppose any constitutional amendment that would overturn Roe v. Wade.
However, Obama also hopes to decrease the number of abortions by decreasing the number of unwanted pregnancies. He co-sponsored the Prevention First Act, introduced in 2007, which would expand access to family planning and health-care services in order to reduce unwanted pregnancies.
