Man killed in Market Street shooting

Philadelphia Police have arrested two suspects in relation to a fatal shooting that took place early Sunday morning on the 3900 block of Market St.

Tyree Musier and Jonte Slater, both 22, were arrested Sunday afternoon and charged with murder and related charges, Philadelphia Police Sgt. William Gallagher of the homicide division said.

At about 1:12 a.m. Sunday, Penn Police responded to sounds of gunfire in front of the University City Townhouses on the 3900 block of Market St.

When they arrived on the scene, they found Nathaniel Crawford, 26, with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and back. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead.

According to Gallagher, the shooting occurred after an argument between the two suspects and the victim.

Penn Police then followed a vehicle they had seen speeding away from the scene. They pulled it over several blocks away, questioning the three men in the car. No charges were filed against any of the men at that time.

Penn Police also recovered a gun thrown from the car, Division of Public Safety spokeswoman Stefanie Cella said.

"It was a great job by Penn Police," Cella said. "They got the victim, they found the suspects and they recovered the weapon."

Later on Sunday, Philadelphia Police arrested Musier and Slater, who were both in the car stopped by Penn Police. The third person, Gallagher said, will not be charged.

According to Gallagher, there are currently no other suspects and Philadelphia Police believe Musier and Slater are the two people responsible for the shooting.

Neither the victim nor the suspects are affiliated with the University, Gallagher said.

Cella said the shooting was an isolated incident in no way related to the University.

Crawford's death, along with another homicide in North Philadelphia that took place at about the same time on Sunday, brings the total number of homicides for the year to 153. At the same time last year, the total number of homicides in the city was 193.
