News Brief: Suspicious material at Harnwell not hazardous

Security officials restricted entrance into Harnwell College House last night at about midnight as authorities investigated a suspicious material that was found on the building's 14th floor.

After on-site testing, and analysis, the substance was found not to be hazardous.

Fire officials at Harnwell last night said they were called to investigate a report of a potentially hazardous liquid in front of a room on the 14th floor.

Entrance into the building was restricted for about 20 minutes while the incident was investigated by Philadelphia Fire Department and Philadelphia and Penn police.

The precautions and immediate response were "standard procedure" for such an incident, according to a policeman on the scene.

According to residents of the 14th floor, a foul-smelling yellow and clear liquid was found in the hallway in front of the staircase.

Facilities officials were called to clean up the liquid. The graduate associate on the floor, believing the liquid could possibly be an irritant, also called authorities to make sure the material was not hazardous.

The incident is still under further investigation.

House Dean Suhnne Ahn could not be reached for comment.
