Sleep. Exercise. Fling.

These are all things being recommended to students this year.

"Fling: Ask Us Why" was revealed by the Social Planning and Events Committee last Friday to be the theme of this year's Spring Fling, which will take place on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12.

The slogan is derived from the Office of Health Education's Ask Us Why campaign, which was ended after a multi-year run. The theme was selected from a list of over fifty ideas and received the majority vote from Fling committee members.

"The committee felt that Fling: Ask Us Why was fitting since the OHE campaign has been very popular on campus for the last few years," Fling co-director and College senior Juliana Calhoun said.

"We were a little worried that freshmen may not associate with the theme, but all the freshmen on the committee got it," Fling co-director and College junior Michelle Jacobson said.

The announcement also kicked off the annual Spring Fling logo contest, during which students are invited to submit logo designs for the Fling T-shirt and other souvenirs.

The designer of the winning logo will be awarded $100 and a pair of tickets to the Fling concert on April 11.

The directors are hoping to test out some new ideas for Fling, like bringing in more diverse musical genres, said Jacobson.

"There's tons of people in and out of the Quad all day, so there's a huge amount of publicity that Penn groups or bands can get and a huge market they can potentially tap into," said Jacobson.

Continuing with tradition, the popular annual Fling concert will be held Friday night of the celebration. The band will be announced "in the next few weeks" according to SPEC Concerts co-director and College sophomore Preston Hershorn.

Carnival, which includes free food, music and activities, will take place the next night on College Green.

Additional information about Fling, joining the committee or submissions is available on the SPEC Web site at www.specevents.net.
