U. City brothers win $27M Powerball jackpot

Two University City residents have struck it rich.

Brothers Jim and Tom Hare, who run a printing business near Penn's campus on 42nd Street, recently accepted a $27 million check from the Pennsylvania Lottery when they won the Powerball jackpot.

Jim Hare, who purchased the ticket on May 28, realized he had the winning number on June 1, and quickly informed his brother.

"I always buy the tickets, but of course, I share them with my brother," he told The Philadelphia Daily News.

The ticket was purchased at the University Deli, located near the intersection of 42nd Street and Chester Avenue.

Deli owner Salah Hussain said Hare was a regular at the deli. "He has come in here every day for the past eight years."

"We are very happy for him," he added.

The University Deli received a great deal of media attention after it was announced that the winning ticket had been sold there -- attention that "almost doubled sales of lottery tickets and generally increased business," Hussain said.

Hussain reported that Hare has hired a lawyer and an accountant, and is currently on vacation in Las Vegas.
