Penn student arrested for dorm assault

Student allegedly fondled female in her Harnwell room

A University student was arrested yesterday afternoon for allegedly fondling a female student in her Harnwell College House room on Saturday, according to University Police.

The student is expected to be arraigned by today, according to Police Chief Thomas Rambo.

"At about 3:50 p.m. [yesterday], we served an arrest warrant for the suspect in the Harnwell House, High Rise East, indecent assault," Rambo said, noting that he could not release the identity of the student or the details of the assault until the arraignment.

Early Saturday morning, a female student woke up to find a male fondling her in Harnwell.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m., according to the UPPD.

After the student woke up, she "chased [the suspect] out of her room and chased him to another floor and then lost him," Vice President of Public Safety Maureen Rush said Sunday night. She explained that afterwards the victim "immediately went down to the front desk, where she told the Allied Spectaguard on duty what happened."

Police have not said whether or not the female student's door had been unlocked prior to the entrance of the assailant.

"That part of the incident is still part of the investigation," Rambo said, adding that details like this would most likely be available in the next day or so.

Still, Rambo was clear that the person in custody did not enter the building without permission.

"He was a student at the University," Rambo said. "It's not a stranger."

This is the second indecent assault to occur in one of the college houses since the beginning of the semester.

On Aug. 27, an employee of Penn Jersey Window Cleaning, a University subcontractor, allegedly entered the dormitory room of a female graduate student in Hamilton College House, "basically indecently assaulting" her.

Marshall Thompson has been charged with attempted rape, burglary, criminal trespass, unlawful restraint, indecent assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and false imprisonment in conjunction with that incident.

And last fall, a man allegedly gained access to a female student's room in the Quadrangle and attempted to rape her.

Jacob Leslie Dallas was arrested in connection with the assault.
