Several arrested on Spruce St.

Witnesses said those arrested were throwing bottles at the scene of a car accident.

Several people, whom police believed last night to be Penn students, were arrested yesterday afternoon just as Spring Fling festivities were unofficially getting underway.

Penn Police said the people were arrested at 5:34 p.m. for throwing bottles into the street. Police would not, however, give the exact number of arrests or the address at which the incident occurred.

According to a female student who wished to remain anonymous, a car accident involving two vehicles occurred outside a house at 3930 Spruce Street, where the students who were later arrested were standing outside on the porch drinking beers. Students present at the house confirmed the address as the location of the incident.

"Words were exchanged between at least one of the boys [on the porch] and those involved in the accident," the witness said.

The police then arrived at 5:34 p.m. They arrested several of the students and removed beer from the house, observers said.

The event comes at the beginning of this weekend's Spring Fling activities, a weekend known for students' high alcohol consumption and rowdy parties. Penn Police typically enforce the University's alcohol policies more strictly, due to the weekend's festivities.

Last year, 19 alcohol citations and two citations for fighting were handed out by police. No one was arrested for disorderly conduct. In 2000, however, six disorderly contact citations were handed out.
