Music: Party in a Jewel Case

Transsexuals not included

Electronic record label !K7 started the DJ Kicks series in 1995 to supply mixes designed for home stereo use as well as for the dance floor. Featuring tailor-made sets from some of dance music's most visionary DJs and producers, DJ Kicks flourish as a genre-hopping platform for an astonishing variety of sounds, styles and artists. The latest DJ Kicks release features Germany-based Tr by Trio.

There were moments when the Tr by Trio had me bobbin' and weavin', shakin' my hips like a chiquita caliente, like "mmm hmm I be feelin' this right heuh." But then some Jackson 5 wannabes belting out New Age mantras like "High jazz in the sky... rhythm is high jazz" killed the groove faster than Bubba Sparxxx can soil a bumpin' Timberland beat. Cheesy lyrics aside, this CD takes flavors from club-jazz, Brazil, Latin and house and bakes a double-fudge brownie of thick, chewy tracks. Sounds on the album range from typical synthesizer and ball-shakin' bass to shrill Latin chimes and funky beatboxin'.

If you're looking for some music to transform your sad dorm room into a bangin' club scene, Tr by Trio is a good start. Throw in a handful of glamour drugs and a dozen sweaty transsexuals and you'll be ready to dance the night away like Ricky Martin at his coming-out party.
