The Daily Pennsylvanian

EDITORIAL: Cheers

To Interim Provost Michael Wachter, Wharton School Dean Thomas Gerrity and Law School Dean Colin Diver, for jobs well done. Best wishes for the future as you return to teaching posts. To University Trustee Walter Annenberg, for his $10 million gift to endow a chair in the Political Science department and to fund need-based undergraduate financial aid. Annenberg has a long history of generosity to Penn, and his latest gifts address areas of pressing need for the University. To Howard and Ellen Katz for donating the Katz Fitness Center in Gimbel Gymnasium. The sorely needed upgrade of Penn's exercise facilities has generated usership beyond all expectations. To Sansom Common, a social, retail and architectural success that has brightened the campus. We look forward to watching the remainder of the project unfold over the course of the coming year. To University officials, Robert Redford's Sundance Cinemas and supermarket owner Pat Burns, for their plans to revitalize the 40th Street corridor. To the University City District, for its efforts to improve quality of life in the area, including "3rd Thursdays," safety ambassadors, sidewalk cleaners and graffiti removal programs. To the University, for its $300 million plan to renovate dormitory and dining facilities. To the University, for its subsidies to faculty and employees who purchase or renovate homes in the University City area. To the University of Pennsylvania Health System, for winning three major national health care awards. To students, for tearing down the goalposts, storming the court after the Temple game and otherwise taking school pride to new levels. To the Penn football team, for their Ivy League championship and the Penn sprint football team for their CSFL co-championship.
