Alcohol sends frosh to HUP

The victim, a Ware College House resident, was seen leaving the Quadrangle near midnight. Witnesses said they saw the freshman "puking his guts out" shortly before he was taken away by paramedics and University Police officers. A student identifying himself as the victim's resident adviser said the victim would be "OK." He declined to comment further. A HUP nursing administrator did not immediately have any information on the incident. It was at least the third time this month a student has been hospitalized for an alcohol-related illness. Last Friday, a female freshman was rushed from the Quad to HUP after consuming at least 12 drinks at a party at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house. The incident is under investigation by the Office of Student Conduct, the University's internal student judicial system. And the previous weekend, another male freshman in Ware was hospitalized. Also last week, the University released a report outlining strategies for combatting binge drinking, defined as five or more drinks for men and four or more for women. One of the report's recommendations was to schedule more Friday classes to reduce drinking on Thursday nights. -- Ben Geldon
