CAMPUS BRIEFS: Thursday, July 9, 1998

UCD expands sidewalk cleaning service Effective July 1, the UCD has expanded its sidewalk-cleaning enterprises to include the Spruce Hill area between 43rd and 45th streets and Market Street and Baltimore Avenue; the Cedar Park and Squirrel Hill neighborhoods on Springfield, Chester and Kingsessing avenues from 46th to 50th streets; and in West Powelton between 40th and 44th streets and Market Street and Powelton Avenue. The UCD -- established last year as a special services district by Penn, Drexel University and 10 other area organizations -- currently services most of the residential areas in the 2.2-square-mile region bounded by 30th and 50th streets and Spring Garden Street and Woodland Avenue. With this recent expansion, the UCD now cleans 320 square blocks, up from its previous 265. "Most of our services are concentrated in the residential areas around the institutional core of the UCD," Executive Director Paul Steinke said. He added that the new service areas were chosen either for their high student populations or their status as "gateways" into University City. Steinke explained that the UCD's programs -- which also include anti-graffiti efforts and the Clark Park Farmer's Market -- are established in order "to make the neighborhood cleaner and safer." -- Edward Sherwin
