Bayer again nominated for Fencer of the Year For consecutive years, Bayer has been awarded United States Olympic Committee Athlete of the Year in men's fencing. Bayer, a member of the 1996 United States Olympic Team, was recently nominated for this honor an unprecedented third straight year. Winning the award once again will be tough. "It usually isn't given even two years in a row," Bayer said. "They like to switch around people. But last year since I competed in the Olympics and captain of the foil team, they gave it to me two years running." Also working against Bayer's chances was his failure to qualify for the IFA championships in foil this season, as Yaron Roth was the lone Quaker to make the cut. Still the sophomore foil hopes his name is selected. Even though Bayer earned United States Olympic Committee Athlete of the Year twice already, he enjoys the company of others named top in their respective sport. "It goes to one man and one woman in each sport," Bayer said. "It's a big honor because people like [Pete] Sampas and Tara Lipinski win this award." -- Marc Edelman
