CAMPUS BRIEFS: Friday, April 10, 1998

Study says emergency system in good shape The team can only hope that this weekend the Schuylkill River's home course advantage will bring them out of the slump that placed them dead last in the San Diego Crew Classic last weekend. In the first major regatta of the spring season, the team's time of 7:11.48 placed them behind 12 other teams -- including Syracuse and Northeastern, both of whom will return this Saturday to race in the Orange Challenge Cup. Before the unnerving end to last weekend's Jessop-Whittier Cup in California, the team navigated the choppy Schuylkill competently two weekends ago, coming in second at the Connell Cup. They rowed five seconds behind Yale with a time of 7:39.8. Although the San Diego Classic proved fruitless, the team's coach Barb Kirch found the close race between Syracuse and Penn encouraging, as Penn was only two seconds behind the Orangemen. -- Jennifer Arend
