The Penn women's crew team takes its sixth straight Class of '91 plate.To the Editor: The department is currently engaged in recruiting political scientists of the highest caliber. The process is being led very effectively by Ian Lustick, chair of the department, and by the University-wide Task Force on American and Comparative Democratic and Legal Institutions chaired by Deputy Dean Rick Beeman. We have had excellent cooperation in this effort from University President Judith Rodin and Interim Provost Michael Wachter. Although the process is complicated by fierce competition for the best in the field, we will not settle for less and I am confident that we will succeed. Samuel Preston SAS Dean Fling bands offer variety To the Editor: I would like to defend (and applaud) the lineup for the Fling '98 concert. SPEC has put together a bold and unique bill for this show, comprised of several acts famous for their outstanding live performances. Though they might not be "mainstream" or "top-40," all the bands have musical integrity and are esteemed within the music world. Hopefully the students of this university will see beyond the MTV name recognition factor and come out to see a show that they will surely enjoy. As for the bands themselves, they each offer something which might appeal to a different audience. Jon Spencer performs one of the most intense shows around, full of irreverent theatrics. Fishbone's ska/punk/funk/etc. is impressive and energetic. And Maceo Parker is a legend of funk, second only to James Brown (whom Parker backed up on almost all of the Godfather's classic recordings). I wholeheartedly urge the Penn community to trust the SPEC concert committee and come out to support this promising event. Andrew Zitcer College '00
