Bell Atlantic gives $50k to University City District The UCD has a total endowment of about $4.3 million. Penn donated about $1.5 million of that total and will donate a similar amount during each of the next five years. About a dozen people -- including Bell Atlantic and UCD officials as well as UCD street cleaners and safety ambassadors -- attended the ceremony. The UCD, established last year by Penn, Drexel University, Amtrak and other area institutions, aims to improve and promote University City. -- Seth Grossman W. Phila. man assaulted by three acquaintances A 20-year-old West Philadelphia man was beaten up by three male acquaintances Monday in an attempted robbery outside University Pinball on the 4000 block of Spruce Street, police said. The man, who is not affiliated with the University, told University Police he had been playing pool with the three men inside the game room earlier in the day. He was exiting the building at about 4:45 p.m. when they approached him, demanding all of his money and claiming they were armed with a hammer, according to University Police Det. Gary Heller. When the man refused to give them his money, all three men punched him several times in the face and head, backing him up against a wall before fleeing in an unknown direction, Heller said. The man suffered multiple contusions to his face and head and was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was treated and released Monday night. University Police detectives are investigating the incident. -- Maureen Tkacik
