Penn loses frosh QB Brian Russell

But Penn's signal-calling situation, which looked like a clear fight between Russell and junior Tom MacLeod, became muddled over winter break. In addition to the transfer of Matt Rader from Division I-A Duke, Penn lost Russell. The West Covina, Calif., native did not return to Philadelphia after the break. Instead, Russell transferred from the University after only one semester. According to Penn Director of Athletic Communications Shaun May, Russell was not having academic problems. When contacted at his parents' home Tuesday night, Russell declined to comment on the specifics of his departure, citing differences with the coaches. Penn coach Al Bagnoli was unavailable for comment. -- Jordan Smith
