But more importantly, in addition to being here for Leroy when his gunshot wound has healed, these new security measures are taking effect now, protecting the rest of us as winter approaches and the days get shorter in West Philadelphia. Allocating $300,000 to the blue light phone improvement project is money well spent at the appropriate time. Deployment of the 29 new security personnel, as soon as they are trained and hired, can't happen soon enough. The University must continue to press the city of Philadelphia for additional street lighting on Walnut and Spruce streets, main thoroughfares for pedestrian travel and home to numerous undergraduates, especially Greeks. In addition, the review of Escort service's policies and route organization -- including, if necessary, the scrapping of set transit routes in favor of X vans that will be able to more quickly and efficiently ferry students from place to place -- should be completed with the same rapidity that has marked the institution of additional safety measures thus far. Restoring both safety on campus and the community's perception of University City as a safe place to live and work will take time. But clearly, administrators have heard our concerns about the need for additional safety measures on and close to campus. Even better, they are working overtime to address them.
