NEWS BRIEF- Union pickets on Walnut

The site will soon house the West Philadelphia Locksmith Co. Jim Farrow, a business representative for the union, said the electricians were protesting because the contract for electrical work to renovate the location was signed with an out-of-town firm. The union had hoped the contract would go to local workers, and according to Farrow, it is confident the contract will be changed. "It looks like it's in our favor," he said. University officials confirmed yesterday that the contract will most likely change hands. "I believe the electrical contractor that was hired is now off the job," University Associate Treasurer for Real Estate Chris Mason said after negotiations concluded yesterday afternoon. According to West Philadelphia Locksmith owner Phil Paul, the picketing and negotiations may further delay the opening of his shop, which was originally scheduled for October 31. -- Monica Leas
