Chodorow was nominated to the position by University President Judith Rodin in April 1994, and both he and Rodin began their terms on July 1, 1994. Prior to coming to the University, Chodorow was associate vice chancellor for academic planning and dean of arts and humanities at the University of California at San Diego. He is also a noted medieval historian, specializing in medieval law. Chodorow is very active in his spare time, enjoying 100-mile bike rides, acting as a professional soccer referee, cooking and following Major League Baseball.
