When she was first revealed as Commencement speaker, University students seemed apathetic to her reputation despite her position in the NEA and her career as an Oscar-winning actress. However, in light of the content of the speech she delivered to the 2000 plus graduating seniors, the skepticism towards her was reaffirmed. Her speech was almost entirely composed of the virtues for supporting publically funding the arts. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton's Commencement speech in 1993 was also geared towards a specific national issue, namely national healthcare.
