Bernstein, Sorathia named to all-Ivy first team

Compiled by the SP Sports Staff Bernstein and Sorathia were one of only two tandems to receive all eight votes for honors in doubles play. After a successful fall campaign that produced a 13-5 record and a trip to the ITA semifinals, the duo won their first ten matches of the spring season. They finished the year ranked 38th in the nation with an overall record of of 27-7, 6-1 Ivy League. Bernstein was honored in singles for the fourth straight year, becoming the seventh player to achieve that distinction since 1979. At number-one singles, the senior went 29-10 overall (11-5 spring), including a 5-2 record against Ivy League opponents in the spring. In the fall, Bernstein captured the flight "A" singles championships at ECAC's and made it to the semifinals of the ITA Rolex Northeast Regional Championships. The team co-captain finished the year ranked 74th in the nation in the final ITA poll after climbing as high as 62nd at one point. Sorathia, who went undefeated in Ivy League play this spring, led the team with a 30-8 record. The junior went undefeated at No. 2 singles in the Ivy League this spring. She was instrumental in the Quaker's success at the fall ECAC championships, winning the "B" Flight singles title. Sorathia was named co-captain for the 1995-96 season.
