'Stand and Deliver' star to speak Actor Edward James Olmos, who appeared in the hit television series Miami Vice and starred in the movie Stand and Deliver, will speak in the University Museum's Harrison Auditorium Monday about his experiences in Los Angeles and his efforts to remedy the problem of gang violence there. United Minority Council President and College senior Liz Melendez said she is very excited about Olmos' presentation. "He's a very visible spokesperson for the colored community," she said. "He was one of the first people to pick up a broom in the L.A. riots and rebuild the communities that were destroyed as a result of the riots." The speech is co-sponsored by UMC and Connaissance. -- Jamie Phares Hutch opening delayed The weight room of Hutchinson Gymnasium will not open until next Thursday -- almost a week after renovations were scheduled to have been completed, Assistant Director of Recreation John Hamrick said. "We ran into a little snag with the floor," he said, adding that some areas of the flooring around the pillars in the weight room were "a little rough." Hamrick said the floor will be patched and fixed in time for the newly scheduled Thursday opening. "With a project of this size, being five minutes late isn't bad," he added. -- Randi Feigenbaum
