LETTER: Excluded Majority

We, as the incoming presidents of the College Democrats, are disturbed by the decision of the Wharton School and the Clinton Campaign to exclude the vast majority of the University community from the governor's major economic proposal. After speaking with the Clinton campaign of Philadelphia and the Wharton School, we still do not have sufficient reason to believe that only Wharton students were qualified to attend the event at Zellerbach. The College Democrats represent a vast cross section of the University community. Wharton students only comprise a segment -- a small one, at that -- of our entire active organization. In this time of economic recession, the economy is on the minds of many Penn students and employees. What seems to be most ironic is that those whoare most interested in hearing Gov. Clinton have been systematically excluded because of their academic inclination. Both chairs of the Clinton for President campaign at Penn, Phil Crosby and Martin Lind, were denied access to the event because they were School of Arts and Sciences students. We implore the administration to intercede on behalf of all students and employees to end this policy of blatant discrimination. Freedom of information is a basic right, and a vital component of our education. SAMANTHA HALEM College '94 SCOTT SHER College/Wharton '94
