EDITORIAL: "Kudos" (Spring '92)

To the University, for creating a responsible budget plan to deal with Gov. Robert Casey's proposed cuts in the University's appropriation, and for not being Yale. To the University, for decreasing the rate of tuition increase again, increasing faculty salaries and agreeing to continue need-blind admissions for another year. To the Community Service Living-Learning Program, for its unique contributions to both the center of campus and the surrounding area. To the Admissions Office, for attracting more applicants to the University, particularly from underrepresented minorities. To the Mayor's Office, for supporting the University in the Mayor's Scholarship lawsuit so far. To Brian Quinn, for performing a rarity in the baseball world -- a no-hitter. To the Mayor's Office, City Council and the board overseeing Philadelphia's finances, for quickly putting together a strong plan to get the city back on its feet again. To student organizers of combination charity/entertainment events, such as Comic Relief, the Cancer Ball and Penn Rocks for the Homeless. To the Varsity women's gymnastics and women's fencing teams, for winning Ivy titles; and to the men's rugby club, as the only male championship team of any kind this year. To the Bike Cops and their oh-so-cool outfits, particularly if they manage to crash into any University Council faculty members in the course of their duties. Just kidding. Love those shades. To administrators such as Larry Moneta, the new Assistant Vice Provost for University Life, for bringing spirit and a deep concern for students to their jobs. To the flower man at 40th and Locust, for selling daisies. To seniors Vince Curran, Paul Chambers, Ken Graf and Mike Milobsky, for leading the Penn men's basketball team to a 16-10 record this year. To spectators who showed up for the pivitol basketball games and any other sport, for displaying awesome school spirit. To Spring Fling planners, for adding another day to Fling, and to Mother Nature, for providing decent weather each of the three days. To life.
