LETTER: Equal Time

This letter is in response to a quote made by an anonymous freshman reacting to the BGLAD rally on Wednesday (DP 3/26/92). He stated that he does not "think it is right that they have a week to display their sexuality. After all there's no 'Heterosexual Day.' " Well, of course there's no special "Heterosexual Day!" Every day is "Heterosexual Day!" Everywhere you look on any given day, heterosexuals display openly their heterosexuality. They hold hands, kiss, hug and nobody says anything. Yet, as this freshman makes painfully clear, when homosexuals do the same, it is not accepted and people do say things. It is precisely awareness of these attitudes which Bisexual Gay Lesbian Awareness Days hopes to accomplish. Becoming conscious of the attitudes is the first step toward acceptance and change. It is in the spirit of diversity and celebration of themselves that homosexuals wish to share their views with Penn and the community. Everybody needs to keep an open mind and be willing to listen to the views and feelings of others. Otherwise, we miss the point of diversity or, worse yet, may actually increase prejudice and misunderstanding among ourselves. NORA MUNOZ College '93
