LETTER: The Rules

Jason Seiden and Brandon Fogel's column really hit home with me. Come on guys, is it really so difficult to tell whether a woman is willingly having sex with you? The real problem is that you want to play your way, and you don't want to be bothered or confused by any other possibilities. Just like in sports, rules are rules. It's these women who won't play by them who create situation that "soil the image of boxers and sports-demigods alike." Life is so tough for "sexually active males" like you and Batty. I'm sorry that Tyson's victim didn't have enough "bruises on her face and body" to convince you that she was really raped, but if you two are so concerned that non-physical factors like location and the status of the accuser may unfairly affect a trial, why even mention Mike Tyson's status as a champion boxer? I mean, I know that compared to women being raped it's a much bigger tragedy for the sports world to be spoiled by rape convictions, but don't you think it's the fact that he's male that really did him in? As you point out, women these days are trying to throw everyone with a penis in jail -- where will it stop? And you're right, a normal criminal trial just doesn't offer enough protection to guys like you and Mike. Testimony can be so-ooo confusing. Twelve person jury and proof beyond a reasonable doubt? What good are they against an army of vengeful, unpredictable rape-criers? Yessir, your studly lifesyle is in mortal danger, and you are truly "helpless to defend against it." Thank you for pointing out this cruel injustice. LANI REMICK Law '93
