I am writing in response to Magic, Mike and Machismo. Aside from the fact that Chris Lehmann implicitly trivializes rape by holding rape and promiscuity as morally comparable, he seems to think that Magic Johnson somehow deserves his fate. I wonder if he also thinks, then, that promiscuous gay men are similarly "deserving" of their HIV infections -- we'll disregard, as Lehmann does, the fact that these encounters may have been between two consenting adults. After all, if they had many partners -- according to the logic of the column -- then they must have been full of "machismo," and they must have viewed their partners as objects, and they must have been, well . . . sexist?!?
