BRIEF: Flu outbreak hits Philadelphia area

But Student Health Associate Director Evelyn Wiener said yesterday that immunization is "not medically necessary" for most students, adding that Student Health has already vaccinated most "high-risk" students. Wiener stressed, however, that anyone interested in receiving a vaccine shot should call Student Health to set up an appointment. She said Student Health has restocked its supply of the vaccine after running out late last semester. Wiener said that although the vaccine takes two weeks to become fully effective, students concerned about catching the flu could gain a "degree of assurance" with a shot now. The flu is airborne and can be easily transmitted among people living in close quarters such as dormitories, she added. -- Scott Calvert
