Penn Panhellenic recruitment to take place two weeks later this year

This year’s Panhellenic Primary Recruitment will take place two weeks later than usual.

To minimize “conflicts for active sorority members and potential new members going through the process,” the recruitment process has been divided into two parts. In-person events for potential new members will be hosted between Jan. 29, 2027 and Feb. 6, 2027, on the last weekend of January and the first weekend of February.

“Recruitment schedules are reviewed each year rather than following a fixed calendar, with the goal of creating a well-organized experience that complements students’ campus responsibilities and reinforces that academics remain the priority,” a University Life spokesperson wrote in a statement. 

Panhellenic recruitment has historically concluded with “Bid Day” in mid-January. This year, the formal process ran from Jan. 13 to Jan. 18.

“The Penn Panhellenic recruitment schedule is spread over two weekends this year,” Penn’s Panhellenic Recruitment webpage reads. “During the days between rounds, (following philanthropy round, until preference round) there should be no additional communication between chapters and potential new members.”

According to a source familiar with the University’s Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, this year’s recruitment schedule was created after weighing several factors, including the academic calendar, when students return to campus, input from the Panhellenic Executive Board, and the time required to complete “important preparation” before the process begins.

The update to the recruitment process comes after the University announced revised hazing guidelines this July. Under the new policy, hazing violations apply to on- and off-campus activities, as well as virtual activities conducted by student organizations.

All organizations — not just fraternities and sororities — must limit their initiation processes to six weeks, and orientation and pledging activities may not take place between midnight and 8 a.m.

The updated provisions also included instances of hazing that were not explicitly named in the previous version, such as “sexual acts” and “unreasonable financial demands” that constitute “a condition of ongoing membership.”

All second-semester first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior students who meet the University’s outlined requirements are eligible to participate in Penn’s Panhellenic recruitment this winter. 

Participating students will have the opportunity to become members of one of six Panhellenic sororities. Last December, Penn’s chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha was shut down by its national organization amid concerns over participation and the sorority’s “long-term stability.”
